SUMMARY
Title
The Hebrew title of the book is eilleh hadd’vareem. That means “these are the words.”
That is a great title, for it is a compilation of Moses’ sermons on the Law.
However, in English, it is called “Deuteronomy.” That name came from a mistranslation of Deuteronomy 17:18. Instead of saying “this repetition of the Law,” it said “second Law.”
Author
Universal Jewish and Christian tradition attributes the Book of Deuteronomy, along with the rest of the Pentateuch, to Moses.
But in modern days, critical scholars insist that Deuteronomy was compiled from various sources. This seems to be the product of rationalistic skepticism.
Date
The Book of Deuteronomy itself claims to be the words of Moses to the nation at the end of the 15th century BC. just before Israel entered the Promised Land.
Purpose
Moses was preaching the Law to Israel to impress it on their hearts.
His goal was to get the people to renew the covenant made at Sinai. That is, to make a fresh commitment to the LORD God.
Only by unreservedly committing themselves to the LORD God could the people hope to enter the Promised Land, conquer its inhabitants, and then live in prosperity and peace.
