SUMMARY
Title
In the Hebrew text, this book has the superscription of y’hoshua. That is the name of the leading figure, Joshua son of Nun.
His name, as well as the title of the book, mean “YHWH saves” or “YHWH is salvation.”
Author
The Bible does not identify the author of this book.
The most likely author is Joshua himself, with minor additions by Eleazar the high priest and his son Phinehas.
Date
Since an eyewitness wrote much of the book, the date of writing is closely related to the date of the events.
Scholars place that sometime between the 15th century BC and the 13th century BC.
Purpose
The Book of Joshua provides the official account of how the LORD God fulfilled his promise to Abraham. Specifically, how Joshua led the nation to conquer the Promised Land.
In the New Testament, Paul wrote that the events of the Exodus and Conquest are meaningful for Christians in that those events possess significance as types.
The Greek form of the name “Joshua” is “Jesus.” As Joshua led Israel into the Promised Land, and as he interceded for the nation after it had sinned, and as he brought them into victory, so too does the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Lord Jesus Christ brings his people into a promised rest. He intercedes for them continually. And he enables them to defeat their enemies.
