RECIPIENTS. Jewish people, both those who were Christian believers as well as those who were not.

DATE. Scholars suggest a variety of dates, ranging from 37 AD to 70 AD. A date of around 50 AD seems most likely.

SPIRITUALITY

The spirituality of the Gospel of Matthew is the spirituality of Holy Writ, the Sacred Page. You might call it biblical mysticism.

Before Jesus Christ called him, Matthew had been a tax collector in Capernaum. He was Jewish. More than any of the other Gospel writers, Matthew notices how Jesus Christ fulfills the ancient prophecies about the Messiah.

Matthew notes subtle little details, things most people would neither notice nor understand until it was explained to them. Matthew doesn’t notice the action as much as the thinking behind it.

The things that Matthew observes and writes will make his Gospel especially appealing to certain people: thinkers. Intellectuals, analytical people and seekers of knowledge will find that Matthew has put the welcome mat out for them.

If the four Gospel writers were likened to the parts of a body, we see Matthew as the brain.

If you find richness in sacred texts, if you’re an intellectual or analytical or a seeker, then you’ll likely be inspired by all sorts of spiritual texts. With some careful guidance, you might find real inspiration in theology or Systematics or Church history or doctrine.

The biblical text becomes a conduit for a living relationship with God. This is the spirituality of reading.

Reading the biblical text on a regular basis might expand to listening to it in audiobooks or memorizing important verses or finding ways to put the text to song and music. It wouldn’t be too surprising if small-group Bible study and discussion become the meat-and-potatoes of your whole spiritual life. These are the spiritualities of thinking.

Here’s a Bible verse that captures this spirituality of Matthew:

Romans 12:2a: Be ye transformed by the renewal of your mind. (KJV)

John MacArthur represents this spirituality of Holy Writ, as does Chuck Smith and Robert Barron, Thomas Bokenkotter and Paul Tillich.

If the spirituality of Matthew is for you, you’ll want to read the Bible. Other texts might include any Systematic theology text, a Church history text, a Catechism from your church movement. You need the deep thinkers, not the popular stuff.

If the people of intellectual spirituality have a weakness, it’s that they have an intellectual spirituality. What do thinkers do? They sit around and think. And talk. Most aren’t very motivated to put into practice the great things they come up with.

Another weakness is that some people are prone to legalism. They’ve drunk deeply from source texts, books that hardly anybody else even knows about. These people have found THE answer, and everybody had better see it their way!
