SUMMARY

Title

The book is named for its author.

Author

The author’s name is Micah. That is a shortened form of the name Micaiah, which means “Who is like YHWH?”

Micah is mentioned by the prophet Jeremiah. The Lord Jesus Christ quotes Micah twice.

Micah was from the city of Moresheth. That was a Judean town about 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem. It was near the Philistine city of Gath.

Date

Micah ministered during the days of three kings of Judah: Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. That means that Micah’s ministry was between 750 and 686 BC.

Many people assume that Micah’s ministry ended in the early part of Hezekiah’s reign, perhaps before 700 BC.

Purpose

Micah preaches judgment and restoration.

Regarding judgment, the people had failed to obey the Law of Moses. For that reason, the LORD God will punish them.

Regarding restoration, there will be a remnant who will be restored to a place of prominence in the world under the Messiah.

The Book of Micah is written as poetry. It is not written as prose.
