Ezra proclaims a fast

| |

In Ezra chapter 8, King Artaxerxes frees the children of Israel. Just before they embark on this epic journey, Ezra the scribe calls them to fast.

BIBLE VERSE

Ezra 8:21. Then I [Ezra] proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a straight way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our possessions.

DISCUSSION

I proclaimed a fast. Doubtless everybody is eager to get going. However, Before he led the children of Israel back to the Promised Land, Ezra declared a fast. Everyone was to fast and pray.

This served to consecrate themselves back to the One God. And it consecrated their journey to the One God. It gave them a fresh start with the LORD.

CAUTION

Fasting is only for those who are medically capable. Check with your health care provider. Experts say you need to be under the supervision of a doctor during the time of a fast.
