Why would anyone fast?

We’ve known quite a few people who practice fasting. We asked them why they did it. Here is what they told us:

I give it to God as a sacrifice like praise or worship or tithing.

I grow in mental clarity.

I feel better afterwards.

I intercede for other people.

I loose weight.

I get a natural high, like runner’s high.

I feel much more energy.

I save time, not having to shop, cook, eat and clean dishes three times a day.

I experience solidarity with people who are poor and hungry.

I listen better to God by subtracting some of the many distractions in my life.

I consume and spend less, so as to be able to give away more to the poor and needy.

After I am done, I enjoy food and drink more.

Fasting is only for those who are medically capable. Check with your health care provider. Experts say you need to be under the supervision of a doctor during the time of a fast.
