SUMMARY

AUTHOR. The writer calls himself “the elder.” The style of the Letter is quite similar to 1 and 3 John. The ancient opinion was that the Apostle John wrote this letter.

RECIPIENTS. The Letter is addressed “to the chosen lady and her children.” It is possible that the Letter is addressed to a particular Christian woman. No personal names are found in it.

However, many people suggest “the chosen lady” stands for a particular Christian church. And its members are called “her children.”

DATE. No data is available on which to base the date of the writing of this Letter.

Scholars assume it was written in roughly the same timeframe as 1 John. A date in the early 60s is thus the most probable guess.

PURPOSE. In the latter half of the First Century, the heretical doctrines of Doceticm and Gnosticism had made inroads among the followers of Jesus.

John the Evangelist affirms that Jesus Christ was not just a spirit, but rather a real flesh-and-blood person.
