Colossians chapter 3

Paul calls us to seek more of Jesus Christ. We are to live the New Life. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Mutually submit to one another.

SEEK MORE OF JESUS CHRIST

VERSE 1. If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.

seek the things that are above. We are called to seek more of Jesus Christ. We are called to seek more of spiritual realities.

right hand. The Bible often mentions “the right hand” of God. That is a position of power and honor. We believe it refers to Jesus Christ. More verses about the right hand.

VERSE 2. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.

Set your mind. To be able to ignore the man-made religious prohibitions, we must set our mind. We need a strong mindset.

on the things that are above. By ignoring those religious prohibitions, we can center our lives on Jesus Christ and the things of heaven.

VERSE 3. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

your life is hidden with Christ. Jesus Christ becomes the whole point of our lives.

VERSE 4. When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory.

When Christ, our life. Our whole lives become centered on the Lord Jesus Christ.

is revealed. By living for Jesus Christ instead of for man-made religious prohibitions, we will be ready when he returns in glory at the End of Time.

LIVE THE NEW LIFE

VERSE 5. Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

VERSE 6. For these things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience.

VERSE 7. You also once walked in those, when you lived in them;

VERSE 8. but now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth.

VERSE 9. Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings,

VERSE 10. and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator,

the image of his Creator. That is, the image of Jesus Christ.

VERSE 11. where there can’t be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, or free person; but Christ is all, and in all.

Christ is … in all. In Jesus Christ, we are all equal. Nobody is superior to others.

Galatians 3:28. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

VERSE 12. Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;

VERSE 13. bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

VERSE 14. Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

VERSE 15. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.

SING PSALMS AND HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS

VERSE 16. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

MUTUALLY SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER

VERSE 17. Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

VERSE 18. Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

Wives, be in subjection. This was a common notion in the Greco- Roman world.

However, in the New Testament, husbands and wives are to submit to each other:

Ephesians 5:21. subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

subjecting yourselves. Husbands and wives are to submit to one another. It is not just the wife submitting to the husband. Biblically, the husband is called to submit to his wife.

VERSE 19. Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them.

VERSE 20. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this pleases the Lord.

VERSE 21. Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.

VERSE 22. Servants, obey in all things those who are your masters according to the flesh, not just when they are looking, as men pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.

NIV Translation. Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

In our day, some Christians view their employer as a sort of “king.” However, this notion is not in the New Testament. Read more »

VERSE 23. And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men,

VERSE 24. knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

VERSE 25. But he who does wrong will receive again for the wrong that he has done, and there is no partiality.
