Embracing the Unusual

When you encounter a thing that is unknown to you, how do you handle it? Do you reject the unusual? Or do you embrace it?

When some people encounter a thing that is unusual, they reject it. They scurry away. They hurry back to the familiar. Maybe they try to forget about the unusual thing. Or maybe they look back at it with disdain.

But when other people encounter a thing that is unusual, they are captivated. They linger. They stare at it, drinking it in. They note the ways it is unique. The ways it is different. The try to learn from those.

This happens among Christian believers. They study the Bible or Theology. They encounter a thing that is unusual. How do they handle it?

  • Some Christian believers reject the unusual. They scurry back to the familiar. Back to that which is known. Maybe they try to forget about that unusual thing. Or maybe they look back at it with disdain.
  • But when other Christian believers encounter the unusual, they are captivated. They linger. They stare at it, drinking it in. They note the ways it is unique. The ways it is different. The try to learn from those differences.

The Christian believer who willingly embraces the unusual:

How about you? When you encounter a thing that is unusual, how do you handle it? Can you train yourself to embrace the unusual?
