SUMMARY

Title

The Prayer of Manasses is named for its principle character.

Author

The author was evidently a Jewish man.

Date

The majority of scholars believe the Prayer of Manasses was written in Greek, in the second or first century BCE.

Purpose

Manasseh reigned as king of Judah from 698 to 642 BCE.

Of all the kings of Judah, he is the most wicked. The most idolatrous. He inflicted the most damage on his people and his nation.

He did evil for decades, misleading his nation and bringing about the destruction of Judah.

Manasseh was taken captive by the Assyrians. While a prisoner, he prayed for mercy.

Upon being freed and restored to the throne, he turned from his idolatrous ways.

This narrative demonstrates that the LORD God is especially the God of those who repent of their sinful ways.
