Seven benefits of the Scripture Memory Project
Memorizing Scripture is hard work. Do people ever get anything out of it? Is it ever a waste? What benefits does it offer?
It takes most people about an hour to memorize a Bible verse. Some people are quicker. Others take longer.
What is the result of that hour? Do people get anything out of it? Is it ever a waste? What benefits does it offer?
Here are seven benefits of the Scripture Memory Project:
Benefit 1. Worship God
The Scripture Memory Project is a way to worship the LORD God.
As we ingest his words by memorizing them, our inner being gives God praise and worship.
Benefit 2. Firsthand Experimentation
Memorizing Scripture is like being a scientist.
Step 1. You immerse yourself into your field of study. In this case, the field of study is the Bible verse you are memorizing.
Step 2. That immersion gives you fresh insights.
Step 3. You can test the validity of those fresh insights by acting upon them.
Benefit 3. Change Your Life
Many people are convinced that they cannot change their lives. But God can easily change it for them.
How can we let God’s life-changing power into our lives?
The more we immerse ourselves in the Scriptures, the more his power works within us.
Benefit 4. Humble
The Scripture Memory Project is a way to allow God’s power into our lives.
But it isn’t a showy manifestation of God’s power. It’s quiet.
It doesn’t lend itself to Christian bragging, such as,
I got an answer to my prayer!
or a hundred other spiritual-sounding things that many Christian say, but are pretty much about aggrandizing the self.
Benefit 5. Sowing Seeds
Each verse is like a seed.
In the Scripture Memory Project, you indiscriminately fling those seeds all over the terrain of your heart and mind.
The seeds go everywhere:
- The rocky soil where the seed might not last very long
- The thorny soil that tries to choke out the seed
- The path, where other initiatives stomp on it
- The fertile soil that bears rich fruit: thirty, sixty, or even a hundredfold.
Benefit 6. At Least Some Will Stick
Scripture Memory saturates your heart and life with the Bible. Like flinging a lot of mud at the wall, at least some will stick.
In that sense, people find that they can relax. Its OK if some “mud” slides off the wall, since at least some will stick.
Maybe the portion that sticks is the only portion that God means for us to notice.
Maybe it was by divine intent that a lot slides off, so that we don’t get distracted by things that God doesn’t wish for us to focus on.
Benefit 7. Spiritual Warfare
We are to fight the good fight. We are to take up the shield of faith and the sword of the word of God.
I can’t imagine a better way to be ready, than to have key passages memorized.
