The Bridge Illustration

|

Let’s say your non-Christian friend were to ask, “How can I know God?” How would you respond? Can you describe the gospel, simply and convincingly?

Christians have created lots of ways to do that. Lots of ways. A popular way among Evangelical Protestants is called the Bridge Illustration. It is simple and clear. it is easy to learn to present. And its hearers often find it convincing.

The Bridge Illustration can be learned. You simply watch somebody present it. Then you practice presenting it yourself. Practice it until you can do it from memory. Then go out and use it. Use it to present your faith in Jesus Christ to anybody who will listen.

Here are four examples of people sharing the Bridge Illustration. Which one resonates with you the most? What would you change? Can you make your own presentation of the Bridge Illustration?

BIBLE VERSES

Here are some great Bible verses you can use in the Bridge Illustration:

GOD’S PLAN

Genesis 1:26. God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

SIN POISONED THE WORLD

Romans 3:23. For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.

Isaiah 59:2. But your iniquities have separated you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

Proverbs 14:12. There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

GOD’S REMEDY

Romans 5:8. But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

OUR RESPONSE

John 5:24. Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

John 10:10. The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

Romans 5:1. Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
