“The Idea of the Holy” by Rudolf Otto – Chapter 1

Chapter 1 of “The Idea of the Holy” by Rudolf Otto is named ‘The Rational and the Non-Rational.’ Here is our summary.

CHAPTER 1

The Rational and the Non-Rational
Pages 1 to 4

We speak of God by analogies and concepts. Those are rationalistic in nature. They allow for knowledge of the transcendent in terms of conceptual thought. [Page 1]

However, those discussions portray the essence of the divine by means of rational concepts. That is seriously misleading. Much of God eludes our conceptual way of understanding. [Page 2]

A focus on doctrines and dogma has led to a rationalist religion. Its interpretation of God is biased toward the intellectual and rationalistic. It excludes the nonrational. [Page 3]

This rationalistic focus has trained people to shut their eyes to that which is most unique about religious experience. Religion is not exclusively contained in any series of rational assertions. [Page 4]
