The New Testament alludes to the Deuterocanonicals
We found more than 30 places where the New Testament seems to allude to the Deuterocanonical, or Apocryphal, books.
Introduction
Almost all Christians accept two batches of Sacred Scripture:
- The 39 books of the Old Testament
- The 27 books of the New Testament
A subset of Christians, namely Orthodox and Catholic, accept a third batch as Scripture. That third batch is the Deuterocanonical books.
- The word “deutero” means in-between. The Deuterocanonical books are situated in-between. They are in-between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
- The word “canonical” means official. The Deuterocanonical books are situated in-between the official Old Testament and the official New Testament.
Protestants refer to those books as Apocryphal. They use that word to signify that these extra books are “not in the Canon” of official Scripture according to Protestants.
Catholics say there are seven Deuterocanonical books; Orthodox have four more.
We wondered if these Deuterocanonical books are referred to in the New Testament.
We investigated this. We found more than 30 allusions in the New Testament to verses in the Deuterocanonical books.
