Without complaining or arguing

Some people are always complaining. Or arguing. Those are destructive habits. They harm the individual. And the community. They need to STOP.

 


 

INTRODUCTION

 

The prophets were opposed by people who loved to argue and fight. In those days of the Old Testament, there was no shortage of argumentative people.

This is true in our day as well. Many churches spend unimaginable amounts of time dealing with members who argue and start fights.

But we should have nothing to do with argumentative people.

 

OLD TESTAMENT

 

Exodus 14:11. They said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us out of Egypt?

Exodus 15:24. The people murmured against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”

Exodus 16:2. The whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness;

Exodus 16:8. Moses said, “Now the LORD will give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfy you, because the LORD hears your murmurings which you murmur against him. And who are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.”

Numbers 11:6. but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at.

Numbers 12:1. Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman.

Numbers 14:2. All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!

Numbers 16:41. But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the LORD’s people!”

Numbers 17:5. It shall happen that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud. I will make the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you, cease from me.

Numbers 21:5. The people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food!”

Judges 8:1. The men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you treated us this way, that you didn’t call us when you went to fight with Midian?” They rebuked him sharply.

Job 7:11. Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

Habakkuk 1:3. Must I forever see these evil deeds? Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight. (NLT translation)

 

NEW TESTAMENT

 

Luke 5:5. Simon answered him, “Master, we worked all night, and took nothing; but at your word I will let down the net.

1 Corinthians 10:10. Don’t grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.

Philippians 2:14. Do all things without complaining and arguing,

2 Timothy 2:23. Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. (NIV translation)

2 Timothy 2:24. The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient,

1 Peter 4:9. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

Jude 1:16. These are murmurers and complainers, walking after their lusts—and their mouth speaks proud things—showing respect of persons to gain advantage.
