A way which seems right

Our own plans often seem fine. However, it is best to get input from wise people.

INTRODUCTION

Our own plans often seem fine. People get an idea, then act with boldness.

However, they might be completely unaware of their own underlying motives. Maybe they are motivated by, for example, greed or fear or a recent argument.

Or perhaps they are unaware of the consequences of their action.

Foolish people are often quite convinced how right they are. They speak as if everybody who disagrees with them is utterly wrong.

They are deluded. Their delusion is due to their defective thinking.

It is easy to confuse your own zeal with the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

A godly person is humble of heart and wishes to grow further still in holiness.

If another person is willing to offer us advice, and if the person is wise, it can be a real opportunity for us to advance.

How many people have made a major life choice, only later to find it was wrong?

It is best to get input from wise people. They can help us consider our important decisions from several perspectives:

  • The Holy Spirit. As you take the matter to prayer, how has the Holy Spirit led you? Has this leading been consistent, over days, weeks, months, years?
  • Scripture. What does the Bible say about the given topic?
  • Advisors. How do trusted wise people advise you?
  • History. Do any of the historic insights of the faith speak to the issue?
