SUMMARY

AUTHOR. The Letter itself begins with an explicit identification of  Paul as its author. Until modern times, no significant voices questioned their Pauline authorship.

RECIPIENTS. Paul’s son in the faith Timothy. And probably also Titus.

PLACE AND DATE. The approximate date is perhaps 63-66 AD.

PURPOSE. This Letter is highly personal, practical, and unsystematic in nature. It deals with matters of church order which Paul had not addressed except in passing.

The evolving need for structure in the churches, combined with Paul’s awareness that his own steadying influence would soon be passing from the scene, prompted him to address certain ecclesiastical and pastoral subjects.
