Leviathan the Sea Monster

Leviathan is a sea monster in the Bible. It is large. It breathes fire and sparks. It is a created being. We see it as exemplifying the Power of God.

Leviathan is a sea monster. It is large. It breathes fire and sparks.

The Bible portrays it as an actual entity. A created being. It exemplifies the Power of God.

However, in our day, many people explain away Leviathan. The most common explanations are along the lines of the following:

  • It is a myth borrowed from some other ancient tradition
  • It is the seven-headed sea monster Lotion of Ugaritic mythology
  • It is a whale
  • It is a dolphin
  • It is a dinosaur
  • It is a crocodile

 

BIBLE VERSES

 

Genesis 1:21. God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good.

Job 3:8.  Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.

Job 41:1. Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord?

Job 41:19. Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out.

Psalm 74:13. You divided the sea by your strength. You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.

Psalm 74:14. You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces. You gave him as food to people and desert creatures.

Psalm 104:26. There the ships go, and leviathan, whom you formed to play there.

Isaiah 27:1. In that day, the LORD with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.
