We are called to Deny Self

The Lord Jesus, and the rest of the New Testament, calls us to deny ourselves. But what does that mean? How can you grow in denying yourself each day?

INTRODUCTION

What does it mean to deny yourself? There might be as many answers to that question as there are people.

But one of the Japanese translations provides a great insight. The Shin Kai Yaku translation puts it this way: 自分を捨て (“jibun o sute”). It literally means, “to throw away yourself.”

In Jesus Christ, we throw away our sinful nature and take on his nature.

THE LORD JESUS

Matthew 16:24. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Mark 8:34. He called the multitude to himself with his disciples, and said to them, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Luke 9:23. He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

THE REST OF THE NEW TESTAMENT

2 Corinthians 4:11. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus may be revealed in our mortal flesh.
