In the Old Testament, the Israelites often fell into the apostasy of worshipping Baal.
BAAL PEOR AND A PLAGUE
In Shittim, the Israelite men worshipped Baal Peor. And joined in Canaanite fertility rites by having sex with Moabite prostitutes.
Their actions triggered a plague, and twenty-four thousand people died:
Numbers 25:9. Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
Deuteronomy 4:3. Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal Peor; for the LORD your God has destroyed all the men who followed Baal Peor from among you.
Psalm 106:28. They joined themselves also to Baal Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
Psalm 106:29. Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds. The plague broke in on them.
Hosea 9:10. I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season; but they came to Baal Peor, and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved.
1 Corinthians 10:8. Let’s not commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.
Regarding the number of people who died in this plague, there is an apparent discrepancy. But it is easily resolved.
Paul refers to the number of deaths in one day. He says it is 23,000.
All the other verses in the Bible refer to the total number of deaths. It is 24,000, and could have spanned many days.
