The LORD God will rescue Israel. People will mourn the killing of the Messiah.
VERSE 1. A revelation of the LORD’s word concerning Israel: The LORD, who stretches out the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him says:
VERSE 2. “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the surrounding peoples, and it will also be on Judah in the siege against Jerusalem.
the siege against Jerusalem. In the future, the nations will attack Jerusalem.
VERSE 3. It will happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.
I will make. The LORD God is going to do a thing with Jerusalem
a burdensome stone. It can also translated as “a cup of reeling.”
VERSE 4. In that day,” says the LORD, “I will strike every horse with terror and his rider with madness. I will open my eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.
I will open my eyes on the house of Judah. The LORD God will rescue Judah.
VERSE 5. The chieftains of Judah will say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in the LORD of Hosts their God.’
VERSE 6. In that day I will make the chieftains of Judah like a pan of fire among wood, and like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left; and Jerusalem will yet again dwell in their own place, even in Jerusalem.
VERSE 7. The LORD also will save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of David’s house and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem not be magnified above Judah.
VERSE 8. In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He who is feeble among them at that day will be like David, and David’s house will be like God, like the LORD’s angel before them.
NIV translation. On that day the Lord will shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the Angel of the Lord going before them.
the Lord will shield those who live in Jerusalem. The LORD God will supernaturally shield his people.
the feeblest among them will be like David. The LORD God will give his people extraordinary courage.
VERSE 9. It will happen in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
NIV translation. On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem.
destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. The LORD God will stand up for his people.
VERSE 10. I will pour on David’s house and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplication. They will look to me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for his firstborn.
NIV translation. And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son,
I will pour on … the spirit. There will be a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

They will look on me. After the word “me,” the Hebrew has the two letters “Aleph Tav” (the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet), not as a word, but as a grammatical marker.
the one they have pierced. This was fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. When he was crucified, people looked upon him.
they will mourn for him. The followers of the Lord Jesus Christ mourned his death.
an only child … firstborn son. The Lord Jesus Christ was the only child and firstborn son of Mary.
VERSE 11. In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddo.
VERSE 12. The land will mourn, every family apart; the family of David’s house apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;
VERSE 13. the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of the Shimeites apart, and their wives apart;
VERSE 14. all the families who remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.
