And at the glorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ, that fountain will be opened anew for the Jewish people.

a fountain to purify from sin. This prophecy is fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. On the cross, his side was pierced. From it flowed blood and water. This is the fountain of salvation.

VERSE 2. It will come to pass in that day, says the LORD of Hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will be remembered no more. I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land.

I will cut off the names of the idols. Idols will be banished from the land.

Micah 5:13. I will cut off your engraved images and your pillars from among you; and you shall no more worship the work of your hands.

Micah 5:14. I will uproot your Asherah poles from among you; and I will destroy your cities.

the prophets … to pass out of the land. False prophets will be extinguished.

the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land. The evil impulses that inspire false prophets will be extinguished.

VERSE 3. It will happen that when anyone still prophesies, then his father and his mother who bore him will tell him, ‘You must die, because you speak lies in the LORD’s name;’ and his father and his mother who bore him will stab him when he prophesies.

his father and his mother … will stab him. People will finally be repulsed by false prophets.

VERSE 4. It will happen in that day that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they won’t wear a hairy mantle to deceive,

prophets will each be ashamed of his vision. The false prophets will finally be ashamed of themselves.

THE TRUE SHEPHERD

two thirds of them shall be cut off and perish. This prophecy is fulfilled in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hoping to slaughter the infant Messiah, king Herod slaughtered innocent children throughout the land.

VERSE 9. I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, ‘It is my people;’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’ ”

I will bring the third part into the fire. The LORD God will test one third of them by fire. This is to refine and test them.
