SUMMARY
Title
The Book of Hosea is named for its principle character, who is also its author.
Author
According to Hosea 1:1, the author of this Book is Hosea, son of Beeri.
Date
Hosea began his ministry toward the end of the reign Jeroboam II of Israel. That was roughly 793-753 BC.
Purpose
The prophecy of Hosea flows from his own failed marriage.
His wife Gomer was a sex worker. Her work was detestable to Hosea, yet he could not reject her.
Similarly, God’s people were idolators and they oppressed the poor. Those things made them detestable to the LORD God. Yet he could not reject his beloved.
This is a powerful message for the United States. The nation is full of Christians who worship money and oppress the poor.
