FOUR EVENTS PRECEDING THE KINGDOM, CONTINUED

VERSE 1. Now you shall gather yourself in troops, daughter of troops. He has laid siege against us. They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

He has laid siege against us. This refers to the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem.

the judge. The Hebrew word is shofeit. It means “judge.”

with a rod on the cheek. The FOURTH event preceding the future kingdom is that the ruler of Israel will be struck on the cheek with a rod.

The Lord Jesus Christ was struck on the head with a rod. However, that took place outside the context of this verse, which is the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem.

THE FUTURE MESSIAH

VERSE 2. But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come out to me who is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.

NASB translation. But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.

This is a very famous prophecy of the Messiah.

Bethlehem Ephrathah. This is an older name for Bethlehem.

Ruth 1:2. The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.

Matthew 2:5. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,

VERSE 3. Therefore he will abandon them until the time that she who is in labor gives birth. Then the rest of his brothers will return to the children of Israel.

she who is in labor. That is, Israel.

Israel’s pain in being scattered was like the physical pain of labor.

return to the children of Israel. This future Messiah will reunite and restore the nation.

VERSE 4. He shall stand, and shall shepherd in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. They will live, for then he will be great to the ends of the earth.

VERSE 5. He will be our peace when Assyria invades our land and when he marches through our fortresses, then we will raise against him seven shepherds, and eight leaders of men.

He will be our peace. The Messiah is our peace.

VERSE 7. The remnant of Jacob will be among many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, that don’t wait for man nor wait for the sons of men.

VERSE 8. The remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, among many peoples, like a lion among the animals of the forest, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep; who, if he goes through, treads down and tears in pieces, and there is no one to deliver.

VERSE 9. Let your hand be lifted up above your adversaries, and let all of your enemies be cut off.

VERSE 10. “It will happen in that day”, says the LORD, “that I will cut off your horses from among you and will destroy your chariots.

in that day. The Bible often uses this phrase to indicate a future event.

VERSE 11. I will cut off the cities of your land and will tear down all your strongholds.

VERSE 12. I will destroy witchcraft from your hand. You shall have no soothsayers.

VERSE 13. I will cut off your engraved images and your pillars from among you; and you shall no more worship the work of your hands.

Zechariah 13:2. It will come to pass in that day, says the LORD of Hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will be remembered no more. I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land.

VERSE 14. I will uproot your Asherah poles from among you; and I will destroy your cities.

Zechariah 13:2. It will come to pass in that day, says the LORD of Hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will be remembered no more. I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land.
