SUMMARY

Title

This book is known by many titles:

  • The Song of Solomon
  • Song of Songs
  • Canticles
  • The Song

The title “Song of Songs” implies one song out of many songs. The book is one unified song.

Among Solomon’s many songs, this is the best.

It sets before its readers a paradigm for a mutually fulfilling sexual relationship.

Author

The first verse attributes the authorship of this book to Solomon:

Song of Songs 1:1. The Song of songs, which is Solomon’s.

Date

Given that the book was written by Solomon, and that the book refers to Solomon as king:

The book was probably written during the kingship of Solomon, some time between 971 and 931 BC.

Purpose

Many people “spiritualize” this Book of the Bible. They say it’s a parable about God’s love for humanity.

Or they say it’s a “parable” about Christ’s love for his Church.

Or they say is about Israel’s love for the Sabbath.

But if you read the Song of Songs simply, taking it at face value, as it presents itself, it is a story of deep romance and erotic love.

It would seem strange if the Bible was not able to speak of two of God’s greatest gifts to the human race: romance and human sexuality.

The Song of Songs is somewhat circumspect with regard to how it describes sexuality. It often uses allusions. Their meaning can be discerned from the context. We find 24 special terms for sexuality. Read more »
