Why Japan?
Before I left for Japan, people asked me one question. A lot. It was this: “Of all nations you could possibly go to as a foreign missionary, why Japan?”
Japan is an island country in East Asia. Christianity was first introduced into Japan in 1549. It is rich with great saints and martyrs.

While I was living in England, I tried the diet of Mohandas K. Gandhi. I lived on fruit and nuts for a month.
[Japan; the late 1980s] After a year in Japan, I observed that nobody, including myself, was having much success with evangelism. I became convinced we needed Power From On High.
I wrote this Haiku poem after a session of Contemplative Prayer.

The aircraft made its final descent. Its wheels skidded onto the runway. And with that, I had arrived. I was in Japan. I was a foreign missionary.
