Deuteronomy chapter 6

The Greatest Commandment. When you become prosperous. Teach your children.

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

VERSE 1. Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land that you go over to possess;

NLT translation. These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,

that you might do them. Our response to the commands is to do them. To put them into practice.

However, in our day many Christians say something like this: “The Lord knows what is in my heart.” Yet they do not learn the commandments. Nor do they observe the commandments.

VERSE 2. that you might fear the LORD your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you—you, your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged.

NLT translation. so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.

Jewish people call this verse (and the next one) the Shema. They recite it twice a day.

The Lord Jesus Christ said it is the most important of all the commandments.

In a fantastic video, a High School student named Anna Brooks performs a breathtaking new Shema that she wrote herself:

This was filmed by students at Temple Israel. Some of Anna’s classmates appear in the video along with her.

frontlets. The Hebrew word is לְטֹטָפֹ֖ת (“totaphoth”). It means bands. It is commonly translated as frontals, phylacteries. However:

frontlets between your eyes. Many translations say “bind them on your foreheads.”

But the Hebrew is like this: “and they shall be between your eyes as frontlets.”

Here is a breakdown of the key words:

  • as frontlets. The Hebrew word is לְטֹטָפֹ֖ת (“totaphoth”). It means bands. It is commonly translated as frontals, phylacteries.
  • between. The Hebrew word is בֵּ֥ין (“bayin”). It means interval, space between.
  • your eyes. The Hebrew word is עֵינֶֽיךָ (“ayin”). It means an eye.

The location is key. It isn’t on your forehead. Rather, it is between your eyes.

It brings to mind the dot that Hindus put between their eyes to indicate the “third eye,” the locus of some mystical practices.
