Ephesians chapter 2

We are saved by grace and through faith. Jesus Christ unites Jews and Gentiles. We are brought into the household of God.

WE ARE SAVED BY GRACE AND THROUGH FAITH

VERSE 1. You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,

when you were dead. It isn’t that we reformed our life, and then God chose to save us. Rather, God saved us in the midst of our sins.

VERSE 2. in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience.

Isaiah 24:21. In that day the LORD will punish the gods in the heavens and the proud rulers of the nations on earth.

VERSE 3. We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

VERSE 4. But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,

VERSE 5. even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

VERSE 6. and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

VERSE 7. that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;

VERSE 8. for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

by grace … through faith. Are we are saved by faith? By God’s grace? By our own good works? Or by some combination of those? What does the Bible tell us? Read more »

VERSE 9. not of works, that no one would boast.

that no one would boast. Compared to the great work of Jesus Christ for our salvation, our own spiritual works are nothing. We have nothing to brag about.

VERSE 10. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

created … for good works. Good deeds are a natural by-product of our eternal salvation.

we would walk in them. There is no question of whether a believer should do good deeds or not. If we are spiritually reborn, they are as natural as breathing air or eating food.

Paul says when we are spiritually reborn, we become a “new” creation. But what does that mean? What does the evidence show us? Read more »

JESUS CHRIST UNITES JEWS AND GENTILES

VERSE 11. Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “uncircumcision” by that which is called “circumcision” (in the flesh, made by hands),

VERSE 12. that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

VERSE 13. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.

VERSE 14. For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of separation,

he is our peace. Some passages in the Bible speak of the LORD God being all about war. However, the Lord Jesus will be called the Prince of Peace. Read more »

who made both one. The Lord Jesus Christ united us Gentiles with the Jewish people.

VERSE 15. having abolished in his flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace,

VERSE 16. and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility through it.

VERSE 17. He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.

VERSE 18. For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

him … one Spirit … Father. Where is the Holy Trinity defined or alluded to in the New Testament? Here are the verses we found.

WE ARE BROUGHT INTO THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD

VERSE 19. So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God,

fellow citizens with the saints. We get to be in on the blessings! Even though we are non-Jews, we get to be counted in, “when the saints go marching in!”

VERSE 20. being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;

NLT translation. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.

Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone. In the desert, a rock gave God’s people life-saving water. Later, the rock was a symbol for the LORD God. In the New Testament, the rock is the Lord Jesus. Read more »

VERSE 21. in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;

VERSE 22. in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.
