If you are in Christ, are you are a New Creation?

Paul says when we are spiritually reborn, we become a “new” creation. But what does that mean? What does the evidence show us?

INTRODUCTION

Paul says that when we are spiritually reborn, we become a “new” creation. The old things pass away, and all things have become new.

But what does that mean? Here are some common theories:

  • Our old personality is replaced with a new personality
  • Our old worldview is replaced with a new worldview
  • Sin is completely eradicated from our lives
  • We have a changed relationship with the Living God
  • The Lord Jesus Christ lives within us
  • The Holy Spirit lives within us

LOOKING AT THE EVIDENCE

Christians assert that they are a “new” creation.

However, to an outsider, Christians are indistinguishable from non-Christians. In fact, to some outsiders, Christians are the worst of all people:

  • Many Christians are racists. The United States has a centuries-long history of white Christians refusing to repent of their racism.
  • Many Christians are Antisemites. As with the above, the United States has a centuries-long history of white Christians refusing to repent of their hatred for the Jewish people.

Many other examples come to mind:

  • Christians lie, cheat, and steal.
  • Christians commit crimes and go to jail.
  • Christians slander other people.
  • Christians enact laws to deny human rights
  • Christians sexually abuse children.

In all those cases above, the local church does nothing . Nor does the denomination. Nor does the entire Christian movement.

I do not know how to reconcile those deplorable facts about the Christian people with the biblical evidence that when we are spiritually reborn, we become a “new” creation.
