1 Chronicles chapter 24

David reorganizes the priests.

DAVID REORGANIZES THE PRIESTS

VERSE 1. These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

VERSE 2. But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children; therefore Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

VERSE 3. David, with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their ordering in their service.

Zadok … and Ahimelech. They were the two chief priests.

David recruits them to help reorganize the priests.

VERSE 4. There were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and they were divided like this: of the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen, heads of fathers’ houses; and of the sons of Ithamar, according to their fathers’ houses, eight.

the sons of Eleazar. There will be 16 divisions of the sons of Eleazar.

the sons of Ithamar. There will be eight divisions of the sons of Ithamar.

VERSE 5. Thus they were divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

Thus were they divided impartially by drawing lots. With 24 divisions, and with 52 weeks a year, each division will serve about two weeks a year.

princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God. This can also be translated, “Officials of the sanctuary, that is, officials of God.”

This is the first time in the Bible that a religious leader is called a “prince.”

In the Christian era, this will have disastrous consequences.

Catholic bishops view themselves as “princes.” They are granted nearly limitless authority. And many bishops throughout Catholic history will abuse that authority.

Even in our day, the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church is due to the abuse of authority by bishops. They concealed the crimes of their pedophile priests.

VERSE 6. Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites; one fathers’ house being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

the scribe. The Hebrew word is הַסּוֹפֵ֜ר (“has·sō·w·p̄êr”). It means to count, recount, relate.

VERSE 20. Of the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah.
