1 Chronicles chapter 6

The priestly lineage of Levi. Other descendants of Levi. The temple musicians. Aaron’s descendants. Territory for the Levites.

THE PRIESTLY LINEAGE OF LEVI

VERSE 1. The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. These three great heroes of the faith are descended from tribe of Levi.

Exodus 28:1. “Bring Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, near to you from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office: Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

The Levitical priesthood continues in the descendants of Aaron. This verse and the verses that follow provide a lineage of Aaron.

There is a similar list in Ezra 7:1-5. But it has slight differences.

Genealogical lists are not always complete. The writers always include some names and omit others.

Moses. When was Moses born? Estimates vary:

  • Rabbinical Judaism says 1391 BC
  • Jerome says 1592 BC
  • James Ussher says 1571 BC

Miriam. The Bible describes Miriam as a prophet. She is one of the five female prophets mentioned in the Old Testament.

The Bible and the Jewish tradition are very open to female prophets. How strange that we Christians are not. Read more »

AARON’S DESCENDANTS

VERSE 49. But Aaron and his sons offered on the altar of burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

to make atonement. The Hebrew word is וּלְכַפֵּר֙ (“kaphar”). It means to cover over, to pacify, to make propitiation. The descendants of Aaron make atonement for the nation.

In our day, Christians apply that mission to Jesus. They say his ministry is to make atonement (“be a sin offering”) for all of us.

However, we Christians overlook the essence of atonement in those days. It was that Aaron and his descendants ate the sacrifice. If they did not eat the sacrifice, the atonement was no good.

Leviticus 6:26. The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it. It shall be eaten in a holy place, in the court of the Tent of Meeting.

Leviticus 10:17. “Why haven’t you eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, since it is most holy, and he has given it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD?

1 Chronicles 6:49. But Aaron and his sons offered on the altar of burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

In our day, who eats the sacrifice? We do. We all do.

All Christians eat the body of the sacrifice. They eat the body of Jesus. The Lord Jesus removes the specialness of the aaronic priests and puts it on us all.

VERSE 50. These are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son,
