DAVID REORGANIZES THE MUSIC MINISTRY

VERSE 1. Moreover, David and the captains of the army set apart for the service certain of the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with harps, with stringed instruments, and with cymbals. The number of those who did the work according to their service was:

the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun. They are Levites.

who were to prophesy. The Hebrew word is הַֽנִּבְּאִ֛ים (“han·nib·bə·’îm”). It means a ministry of prophesying.  It is to prophecy with music.

Perhaps it refers to putting divine revelation to music. Or perhaps it refers to praise and worship music.

We wonder if they are qualified to be music ministers? Do they have the training and skills needed?

with harps, with stringed instruments, and with cymbals. The musicians prophesied with musical instruments.

Music is associated with the ministry of a prophet:

1 Samuel 10:5. After that you will come to the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is; and it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a lute, a tambourine, a pipe, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.

2 Kings 3:15. “But now bring me a musician.” When the musician played, the LORD’s hand came on him.

1 Chronicles 25:1. Moreover, David and the captains of the army set apart for the service certain of the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with harps, with stringed instruments, and with cymbals. The number of those who did the work according to their service was:

the sons of Heman. They will constitute 14 of the 24 divisions of musicians. Each division will have a dozen men.

VERSE 5. All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

VERSE 6. All these were under the hands of their father for song in the LORD’s house, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and harps, for the service of God’s house: Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman being under the order of the king.

VERSE 7. The number of them, with their brothers who were instructed in singing to the LORD, even all who were skillful, was two hundred eighty-eight.

two hundred eighty-eight. Their music ministry group has 24 groups of a dozen each. That makes for a total of 288 full-time members.

VERSE 8. They cast lots for their offices, all alike, the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the student.
