Isaiah chapter 25

The successful evangelism of the whole world.

 


 

THE SUCCESSFUL EVANGELISM OF THE WHOLE WORLD

 

VERSE 1. The LORD, you are my God. I will exalt you! I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago, in complete faithfulness and truth.

planned long ago. The LORD God’s plans have been in motion for ages.

faithfulness and truth. The LORD God is faithful and true. And what he does is faithful and true.

 

VERSE 2. For you have made a city into a heap, a fortified city into a ruin, a palace of strangers to be no city. It will never be built.

 

VERSE 3. Therefore a strong people will glorify you. A city of awesome nations will fear you.

The Old Testament foresees Gentiles coming to faith in the One God of Israel and bringing gifts to Jerusalem. Here are the key Bible verses about this »

 

VERSE 4. For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat, when the blast of the dreaded ones is like a storm against the wall.

BBE translation. For you have been a strong place for the poor and the crushed in their trouble, a safe place from the storm, a shade from the heat, when the wrath of the cruel ones is like a winter storm.

the poor. The Hebrew word is ddal. It means feeble, weak, helpless.

The LORD God is on the side of poor people. He will rescue them.

the needy. The Hebrew word is evyon. It means oppressed.

The LORD God is on their side. He will rescue them.

 

VERSE 5. As the heat in a dry place you will bring down the noise of strangers; as the heat by the shade of a cloud, the song of the dreaded ones will be brought low.

the dreaded ones. That is, the ruthless ones.

will be brought low. The ruthless ones will be stilled.

 

VERSE 6. In this mountain, the LORD of Hosts will make all peoples a feast of choice meat, a feast of choice wines, of choice meat full of marrow, of well refined choice wines.

NLT translation. In Jerusalem, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will spread a wonderful feast for all the people of the world. It will be a delicious banquet with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat

NAB translation. On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples A feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines.

this mountain. We believe this refers to Mount Calvary, where Jesus Christ was crucified.

for all peoples. The LORD God himself will evangelize ALL the people of the world.

rich food. When people come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, they receive the rich banquet of the Lord Jesus Christ in their heart.

 

VERSE 7. He will destroy in this mountain the surface of the covering that covers all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations.

NLT translation. There he will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth.

He. Is this a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ?

 

VERSE 8. He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for the LORD has spoken it.

NLT translation. He will swallow up death forever! The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears. He will remove forever all insults and mockery against his land and people. The LORD has spoken!

wipe away tears. The LORD God is compassionate with us. And we should be compassionate with each other.

 

VERSE 9. It shall be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God! We have waited for him, and he will save us! This is the LORD! We have waited for him. We will be glad and rejoice in his salvation!”

NLT translation. In that day the people will proclaim, “This is our God! We trusted in him, and he saved us! This is the LORD, in whom we trusted. Let us rejoice in the salvation he brings!”

Behold, this is our God! People behold the LORD God!

We have waited for him. This is the long-awaited moment!

he will save us. In the Old Testament, this phrase is uncommon.

 

VERSE 10. For the LORD’s hand will rest in this mountain. Moab will be trodden down in his place, even like straw is trodden down in the water of the dunghill.

NLT translation. For the LORD’s hand of blessing will rest on Jerusalem. But Moab will be crushed. It will be like straw trampled down and left to rot.

blessing will rest on Jerusalem. Jerusalem will always enjoy God’s favor. This is a permanent state.

Moab. In this passage it is symbolic of the enemies of God.

 

VERSE 11. He will spread out his hands in the middle of it, like one who swims spreads out hands to swim, but his pride will be humbled together with the craft of his hands.

 

VERSE 12. He has brought the high fortress of your walls down, laid low, and brought to the ground, even to the dust.
