Isaiah chapter 60

The LORD’s glory will shine on Israel. The wealth of the nations will come to Israel. Israel will be first among the nations. Israel will be righteous.

THE LORD’S GLORY WILL SHINE ON ISRAEL

VERSE 1. “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the LORD’s glory has risen on you.

Arise, shine. In ancient days, a candle burned in the Tent of Meeting. But in our day, the light is to shine from within us. How can you let your light shine? Read more »

your light has come. It is their time. The divine favor of the LORD God is upon them, in unprecedented ways.

the LORD’s glory has risen on you. This is written in present tense, not future tense. It is happening as Isaiah speaks.

If we believe our mission in life is to touch just a few souls here and there, then our vision is way too small. Thatʼs not enough. The LORD God would make of us a light to the entire world! Read more »

VERSE 2. For, behold, darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.

BBE translation. For truly, the earth will be dark, and the peoples veiled in blackest night; but the Lord will be shining on you, and his glory will be seen among you.

the Lord will be shining on you. Whatever light the Jewish people have comes from the LORD God. He shines on them! (And on us.)

VERSE 3. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

Nations will come to your light. The LORD Godʼs presence among the Jewish people will be attractive.

Like a magnet, it will draw people to them from everywhere.

John 12:32. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.

the brightness of your rising. The Jewish people will be radiant.

THE WEALTH OF THE NATIONS WILL COME TO ISRAEL

VERSE 4. “Lift up your eyes all around, and see: they all gather themselves together. They come to you. Your sons will come from far away, and your daughters will be carried in arms.

They come to you. From all over the world, Jewish people will return to Israel from foreign nations.

daughters will be carried in arms. They are being tenderly carried by guardians.

VERSE 5. Then you shall see and be radiant, and your heart will thrill and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea will be turned to you. The wealth of the nations will come to you.

NAB translation. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, For the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you.

your heart shall throb and overflow. This is the actual experience of:

  • people in a deep mystical state
  • people who get saved by the Lord Jesus Christ
  • people who have been filled with the Holy Spirit

The wealth of the nations will come to you. This promise is not figurative. It is not to be spiritualized or explained away.

Rather, it will actually take place.

VERSE 6. A multitude of camels will cover you, the dromedaries of Midian and Efah. All from Sheba will come. They will bring gold and frankincense, and will proclaim the praises of the LORD.

gold and frankincense. As they arrive in Israel, the Gentile converts will wish to bless the Jews. They will freely give treasures and wealth from around the world to the Jews.

VERSE 8. “Who are these who fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

VERSE 9. Surely the islands will wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, for the name of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you.

ISRAEL WILL BE FIRST AMONG THE NATIONS

VERSE 10. “Foreigners will build up your walls, and their kings will serve you: for in my wrath I struck you, but in my favor I have had mercy on you.

Foreigners will build up your walls. Even Gentiles will help restore the Holy City of Jerusalem.

I have had mercy on you. For centuries, it had seemed as though Godʼs favor was absent.

People oppressed and abused the Jewish people.

VERSE 11. Your gates also shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night, that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations, and their kings led captive.

the wealth of the nations. A massive wave of abundance is coming to the Jewish people!

VERSE 12. For that nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; yes, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

those nations shall be utterly wasted. How nations treat the Jewish people will be vital for their own survival.

VERSE 13. “The glory of Lebanon shall come to you, the cypress tree, the pine, and the box tree together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

the place of my feet. That is, the Temple.

Those who used to oppress the Jewish people will finally cease. Instead, they will embrace and treasure the Jewish people.

They will make up for the evil they had done to the Jewish people.

They will call you the LORD’s City. Nations will give Jewish people lofty names, names according to the holy faith.

ISRAEL WILL BE RIGHTEOUS

VERSE 15. “Whereas you have been forsaken and hated, so that no one passed through you, I will make you an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

I will make you an eternal excellency. Formerly, the Jewish people felt abandoned and despised.

It was right for them to feel that way, as it was true. But that is no longer the case.

Now, they count. They count in big ways. The LORD God declares that they are important.

a joy of many generations. The LORD God will cause people everywhere to be proud of the Jewish people.

They will be a source of joy and inspiration to people everywhere on earth.

VERSE 16. You will also drink the milk of the nations, and will nurse from royal breasts. Then you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior, your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

the milk of the nations. Vast wealth will flow to the Jewish people. All they will need to do is drink it in.

It will not distract them from the LORD God or holy living. Rather, it will enhance their walk with the LORD God.

And they will use that wealth to build the Kingdom of God.

you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior. Eternal life is knowing God the Father and Jesus Christ. Do you know them? Do you have a love-relationship with them? Here are the Bible verses about this »

In place of. Instead of their receiving the merely “good” thing, the LORD God will cause them to receive the “better” thing.

Instead of their receiving the merely “better” thing, the LORD God will cause them to receive the “best” thing.

He will keep “upgrading” them.

I will also make peace your governor. The NET Bible translation puts it this way:

I will make prosperity your leader.

VERSE 18. Violence shall no more be heard in your land, nor desolation or destruction within your borders; but you will call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise.

Violence shall no more be heard in your land. Jewish people will no longer be victims of violence or abuse.

Violence and abuse, in any of their manifestations, will be eradicated from their lives. There will be no more verbal abuse, no more emotional abuse, no more spiritual abuse, no more sexual abuse.

The LORD God will cause those evils to dematerialize from the universe.

He will do the same with all other forms of violence and abuse.

For the rest of eternity, people will treat the Jewish people with respect and peace!

that I may be glorified. The Jewish people are to reflect the splendor of the LORD God.

VERSE 22. The little one will become a thousand, and the small one a strong nation. I, the LORD, will do this quickly in its time.”

NCV translation. The smallest family will grow to a thousand. The least important of you will become a powerful nation. I am the Lord, and when it is time, I will make these things happen quickly. (NCV)

I will make these things happen quickly. How long will it take for all these beautiful initiatives to be fulfilled? It wonʼt take long at all.

When the time is right, after the Jewish people have suffered “a little while,” God will move on all of these.

They will come to fruition quickly. In due time, God will act with speed. He will quickly do this.

In the fullness of time, the Supreme God of all graciousness will fully restore us. Read more »
