Isaiah chapter 62

The LORD God delights in Jerusalem. The LORD God will marry Jerusalem. The LORD God will restore Jerusalem to full glory.

 


 

THE LORD GOD DELIGHTS IN JERUSALEM

 

VERSE 1. For Zion’s sake I will not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning lamp.

NAB translation. For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, Until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch.

I will not be silent. It is no longer the time to be silent. It is now the time to speak. And to shout!

her vindication. Her righteousness is to shine forth:

Matthew 5:16. Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

shines forth like the dawn. Their victory will shine throughout the world!

VERSE 2. The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You will be called by a new name, which the LORD’s mouth will name.

Universalis translation. The nations then will see your integrity, all the kings your glory, and you will be called by a new name, one which the mouth of the Lord will confer.

The nations will see your righteousness. Everyone in the world will behold the greatness of Jerusalem.

 

VERSE 3. You will also be a crown of beauty in the LORD‘s hand, and a royal diadem in your God’s hand.

 

THE LORD GOD WILL MARRY JERUSALEM

 

VERSE 4. You will not be called Forsaken any more, nor will your land be called Desolate any more; but you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD delights in you, and your land will be married.

VERSE 5. For as a young man marries a virgin, so your sons will marry you. As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you.

 

THE LORD GOD WILL RESTORE JERUSALEM

 

VERSE 6. I have set watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem. They will never be silent day nor night. You who call on the LORD, take no rest,

I have set. The speaker seems to be God the Father, and not Isaiah.

watchmen on your walls. The watchmen stood on the walls. They scanned the horizon for the enemy. If they saw a threat, they sounded the alarm. The army would mobilize to protect their boundary.

It is important that we maintain healthy boundaries.

 

VERSE 7. and give him no rest, until he establishes, and until he makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.

Universalis translation. You who keep the Lord mindful must take no rest. Nor let him take rest till he has restored Jerusalem, and made her the boast of the earth.

Nor let him take rest. We are to pray. We are to never give up until the victory is real. This is nicknamed “storming the gates of heaven.”

till he has restored Jerusalem. The goal is full restoration.

made her the boast of the earth. Even more than being restored, the bigger goal is that Jerusalem be the #1 prize of the whole world.

 

VERSE 8. The LORD has sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, “Surely I will no more give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners will not drink your new wine, for which you have labored,

no more give your grain. Their enemies will no longer take away anything from them.

 

VERSE 9. but those who have harvested it will eat it, and praise the LORD. Those who have gathered it will drink it in the courts of my sanctuary.”

those who have harvested it will eat it. The enemy will no longer steal their resources.

 

VERSE 10. Go through, go through the gates! Prepare the way of the people! Build up, build up the highway! Gather out the stones! Lift up a banner for the peoples.

 

VERSE 11. Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your salvation comes! Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him!’ ”

Say to the daughter of Zion. Some things need to be said aloud.

 

VERSE 12. They will call them “The Holy People, The LORD’s Redeemed”. You will be called “Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken”.

You will be called “Sought Out. The LORD GOd desires them. He seeks them.

A City Not Forsaken. They have not been forsaken. And they will never be. Ever.
