Psalm 127

Unless the LORD builds the house.

UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE

A Song of Ascents. By Solomon.

NOTE: The term “A Song of Ascents” identifies psalms 120 to 134 as pilgrim songs to be sung when the Israelites “ascended” (went up) to Jerusalem for the annual feasts.

VERSE 1. Unless the LORD builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

VERSE 2. It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

he gives sleep to his loved ones. If you suffer from insomnia, does that mean the LORD God does not love you? Clearly not.

VERSE 3. Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

children are a heritage of the LORD. Children are indeed a gift from God. That is true in the natural sense, and it is also true in the spiritual sense.

When you minister to someone else, mentoring them in Christian discipleship, that person becomes like a “child” to you.

We see this in St. Paul, who refers to Timothy as his beloved child:

2 Timothy 1:2. to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

VERSE 4. As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of youth.

Isaiah 49:2. He has made my mouth like a sharp sword. He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand. He has made me a polished shaft. He has kept me close in his quiver.

VERSE 5. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They won’t be disappointed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

quiver full of them. To have many spiritual children is a great blessing.

Isaiah 49:2. He has made my mouth like a sharp sword. He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand. He has made me a polished shaft. He has kept me close in his quiver.
