Psalm 145

I will exalt you, my God, the king.

 


 

I WILL EXALT YOU, MY GOD, THE KING

A praise psalm by David.

 

VERSE 1. I will exalt you, my God, the King. I will praise your name forever and ever.

VERSE 2. Every day I will praise you. I will extol your name forever and ever.

VERSE 3. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable.

Great is the Lord. He is most worthy of praise. We will never be able to fathom his greatness.

 

VERSE 4. One generation will commend your works to another, and will declare your mighty acts.

One generation … to another. Throughout all of time, people are telling others about the greatness of the LORD.

 

VERSE 5. Of the glorious majesty of your honor, of your wondrous works, I will meditate.

I will meditate. As we meditate on the wonderful works of the LORD, we find strength and joy.

 

VERSE 6. Men will speak of the might of your awesome acts. I will declare your greatness.

 

VERSE 7. They will utter the memory of your great goodness, and will sing of your righteousness.

the memory of your great goodness. As we see in the next verse, what stands out to godly people is the abundant goodness of the LORD.

He is merciful.

This is in sharp contrast to the naysayers, who complain endlessly about the cruelty of God.

 

VERSE 8. The LORD is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving kindness.

gracious, merciful. As we saw in the previous verse, the Old Testament people are most impressed by the graciousness and mercy of the LORD God.

They note that he is slow to anger and rich in love.

 

VERSE 9. The LORD is good to all. His tender mercies are over all his works.

The LORD is good to all. The Lord’s goodness is not restricted to a specific ethnicity or culture, race or language-group, gender or other subpopulation.

Rather, his goodness and mercy extends to all people of all time, without restriction.

 

VERSE 10. All your works will give thanks to you, LORD. Your holy ones will extol you.

 

VERSE 11. They will speak of the glory of your kingdom, and talk about your power;

 

VERSE 12. to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.

 

VERSE 13. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. Your dominion endures throughout all generations. The LORD is faithful in all his words, and loving in all his deeds.

 

VERSE 14. The LORD upholds all who fall, and raises up all those who are bowed down.

 

VERSE 15. The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season.

The eyes of all wait for you. People everywhere look to the LORD with hope and great need. And he gives them what they need.

 

VERSE 16. You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

VERSE 17. The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and gracious in all his works.

 

VERSE 18. The LORD is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

 

VERSE 19. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear him. He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

 

VERSE 20. The LORD preserves all those who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

VERSE 21. My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD. Let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
