Psalm 8

How majestic is God’s name.

 


 

HOW MAJESTIC IS GOD’S NAME

For the Chief Musician; on an instrument of Gath. A Psalm by David.

 

VERSE 1. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens!

how majestic is your name. The Divine Name refers to the Hebrew word יהוה. Scholars call it the Tetragrammaton. They transliterate it as YHWH. Nobody knows how to pronounce it. Read more »

 

VERSE 2. From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.

Matthew 21:16. and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Did you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies you have perfected praise?’ ”

 

VERSE 3. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;

 

VERSE 4. what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?

what is man, that you think of him? It amazes David that the Lord of the universe even thinks about us humans.

VERSE 5. For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.

the angels. The Hebrew word is Elohim.

The word Elohim, used here, usually means “God.” But it can also mean “gods,” “princes,” or “angels.”

The Septuagint reads “angels” here. See also the quote from the Septuagint in Hebrews 2:7:

Hebrews 2:7. You made him a little lower than the angels. You crowned him with glory and honor.

crowned him with glory and honor. Some people speak as though we humans are nothing before God. They forget all about how important we are to God.

Other people focus on powerfully on sin that they forget that God even loves us.

 

VERSE 6. You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:

ruler. The Hebrew word for “rule” means “dominion over.”

put all things under his feet.God graciously bestows us with human dignity as his ambassadors on earth.

Nations send ambassadors abroad. And the Lord Jesus Christ sends us out as his ambassadors to the world. Read more »

 

VERSE 7. All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field,

 

VERSE 8. the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

 

VERSE 9. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
