VERSE 1. The LORD reigns! Let the earth rejoice! Let the multitude of islands be glad!

NAB translation. The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad.

A fire goes before him. A consuming fire is another a manifestation of the appearance of the LORD, for by it he destroys his foes.

mountains melt like wax. Mountains are among the most solid things we know. Yet before the awesome presence of the LORD, they will melt.

In our own lives, our troubles can seem like mountains. Yet they are nothing compared with the glory of God. Before him they will melt.

VERSE 6. The heavens declare his righteousness. All the peoples have seen his glory.

VERSE 7. Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!

NLT translation. Those who worship idols are disgraced—all who brag about their worthless gods — for every god must bow to him.

images. The Hebrew word is פֶ֗סֶל (“pesel”). It means carved image, graven image, idol.

you gods. The Hebrew word is אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (“Elohim”).

 

VERSE 8. Zion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced, because of your judgments, LORD.

NAB translation. Zion hears and is glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments, O LORD.

NIV translation. Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are gladbecause of your judgments, Lord.

NLT translation. Jerusalema has heard and rejoiced, and all the towns of Judah are glad because of your justice, O LORD!

WEB translation. Zion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced because of your judgments, LORD.

VERSE 10. You who love the LORD, hate evil. He preserves the souls of his holy ones. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.

NIV translation. Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

He preserves the souls of his holy ones. God will protect us and deliver us.

VERSE 11. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

NAB translation. Light dawns for the just, and gladness for the honest of heart.

NIV translation. Light shines on the righteous and joy on the upright in heart.

NLT translation. Light shines on the godly, and joy on those whose hearts are right.

WEB translation. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

gladness for the upright in heart. We are to be marked by gladness. Our gladness is a primary way for us to praise the LORD.

 

VERSE 12. Be glad in the LORD, you righteous people! Give thanks to his holy Name.

NAB translation. Rejoice in the LORD, you just, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

NIV translation. Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.

NLT translation. May all who are godly rejoice in the LORD and praise his holy name!

WEB translation. Be glad in the LORD, you righteous people! Give thanks to his holy Name.
