The author foresees the magnificent coming of the LORD in all his splendor, and calls us to gladness and worship.

VERSE 2. Clouds and darkness are around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Clouds and darkness. This is a picture of the magnificent reigning appearance of the LORD.
A fire goes before him. A consuming fire is another a manifestation of the appearance of the LORD, for by it he destroys his foes.
Nahum 1:6. Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him.
lightning lights up the world. That is true of literal lightning. And it is true of our relationship with God. He lights up our world.
VERSE 5. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
mountains melt like wax. Mountains are among the most solid things we know. Yet before the awesome presence of the LORD, they will melt.
In our own lives, our troubles can seem like mountains. Yet they are nothing compared with the glory of God. Before him they will melt.
Nahum 1:5. The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it.
The heavens declare his righteousness. The cosmos itself will shout the glory of God.
VERSE 7. Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!
images. The Hebrew word is פֶ֗סֶל (“pesel”). It means carved image, graven image, idol.
you gods. The Hebrew word is אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (“Elohim”).
Zion heard and was glad. When we learn what God has done for us, it’s uplifting and inspiring and exciting!
VERSE 10. You who love the LORD, hate evil. He preserves the souls of his holy ones. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
hate evil. That is, live in faithful obedience to God’s righteous standards.
He preserves the souls of his holy ones. God will protect us and deliver us.
He delivers them out … of the wicked. The LORD sets us free from the wicked. Get ready to be set free!
gladness for the upright in heart. We are to be marked by gladness. Our gladness is a primary way for us to praise the LORD.
Be glad. The Hebrew word is שִׂמְח֣וּ (“samach”). It means rejoice, be glad
righteous. The Hebrew word is צַ֭דִּיקִים (“tsaddiq”). It means righteous, just, blameless, innocent.
Give thanks. The Hebrew word is וְ֝הוֹד֗וּ (“yadah”). It means thanks, praise
