This is a theocratic psalm. It celebrates that the LORD reigns over the world. He is living and active, enthroned for all eternity.
VERSE 1. The LORD reigns! He is clothed with majesty! The LORD is armed with strength. The world also is established. It can’t be moved.
The LORD reigns. Most translations say “The LORD is king.” It is an assertion of God’s enduring kingship.
clothed with majesty. In those days, clothing was considered an extension of a person. Being clothed with majesty describes the LORD as majestic and powerful in His reign.
The world also is established. All the moral and legal concerns of life will be solidified under the dominion of the LORD.
VERSE 2. Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting.
from everlasting. The LORD’s sovereign rule is from eternity.
VERSE 3. The floods have lifted up, LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves.
lift up their waves. Ancient Canaanites believed Baal attained his position of power by overcoming Prince Yamm, which was the sea. But these verses say the LORD is mightier than the sea.
VERSE 4. Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, The LORD on high is mighty.
VERSE 5. Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, LORD, forever more.
Your statutes stand firm. The Scriptures are trustworthy.
