Psalm 143

David is in a desperate situation. Yet he trusts the LORD and prays for deliverance from those who oppressed him. He meditates on the works of the LORD.

I TRUST IN YOU

A Psalm by David.

VERSE 1. Hear my prayer, LORD. Listen to my petitions. In your faithfulness and righteousness, relieve me.

In your faithfulness and righteousness. David brings to mind the LORD’s faithfulness and righteousness. That is a great way to pray!

VERSE 2. Don’t enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.

Don’t enter into judgment. That is, don’t put me on trial. Don’t judge me.

no man living is righteous. To sin is to violate God’s will for us. It harms our relationship with God. We all have missed the mark and sinned. Here are the verses we’ve found »

VERSE 3. For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead.

the enemy pursues my soul. The enemy takes pleasure in pursuing us. He delights in hunting us down. Our demise is his goal. He is a thief who comes to steal and to kill and to destroy:

John 10:10. The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

VERSE 4. Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.

my spirit overwhelmed within me. David is losing all hope.

heart within me is desolate. David is paralyzed with fear.

VERSE 5. I remember the days of old. I meditate on all your doings. I contemplate the work of your hands.

I meditate on all your doings. David meditates on what God has done. Do you meditate?

VERSE 6. I spread out my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land. Selah.

My soul thirsts for you. Do you thirst for God? How can you increase your thirst for God?

Matthew 5:6. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

VERSE 7. Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Don’t hide your face from me, so that I don’t become like those who go down into the pit.

Don’t hide your face from me. If you are in love with the LORD, you do not want to lose his intimate closeness.

VERSE 8. Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

your loving kindness in the morning. Many people spend the first part of the day in the Bible and in prayer. It is a powerful way to start the day with God’s loving kindness.

I trust in you. David restates his trust in the LORD. This refreshes it, just as saying to a loved one, “I love you,” refreshes that love.

Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

I lift up my soul to you. David gives himself to the LORD. Lovers give themselves to each other.

VERSE 9. Deliver me, LORD, from my enemies. I flee to you to hide me.

Deliver me. David needs to be rescued.

I flee to you to hide me. David hid himself in God. How can you hide yourself in God?

VERSE 10. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

VERSE 11. Revive me, LORD, for your name’s sake. In your righteousness, bring my soul out of trouble.

for your name’s sake. David wants the LORD to be glorified.

VERSE 12. In your loving kindness, cut off my enemies, and destroy all those who afflict my soul, For I am your servant.
