Psalm 143

I trust in you.

 


NOTE

This is one of the eight “penitential” Psalms:

  • Psalm 6. Having been reproved by the chastening rod, David petitions God for deliverance.
  • Psalm 51. Create in me a clean heart, O God.
  • Psalm 102. The LORD God will arise and have mercy.

 

I TRUST IN YOU

A Psalm by David.

 

VERSE 1. Hear my prayer, LORD. Listen to my petitions. In your faithfulness and righteousness, relieve me.

In your faithfulness and righteousness. David brings to mind the faithfulness and righteousness of the LORD God.

That is a great way to pray!

relieve me. This is one of the eight “penitential” psalms.

 

VERSE 2. Don’t enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.

Don’t enter into judgment. That is, don’t put me on trial. Don’t judge me.

no man living is righteous. To sin is to violate God’s will for us. It harms our relationship with God. We all have missed the mark and sinned. Here are the verses we’ve found »

 

VERSE 3. For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead.

the enemy pursues my soul. The enemy takes pleasure in pursuing us. He delights in hunting us down. Our demise is his goal.

VERSE 4. Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.

my spirit overwhelmed within me. David is losing all hope.

heart within me is desolate. David is paralyzed with fear.

 

VERSE 5. I remember the days of old. I meditate on all your doings. I contemplate the work of your hands.

I meditate on all your doings. David meditates on what God has done.

Do you meditate?

 

VERSE 6. I spread out my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land. Selah.

My soul thirsts for you. Our heroes of the faith hungered and thirsted for the living God. How can you become more hungry for God? More thirsty for God? Read more »

To fast is to abstain from eating. And possibly drinking. Or to follow a restricted diet. It is a wonderful companion during special times in our lives. Read more »

 

VERSE 7. Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Don’t hide your face from me, so that I don’t become like those who go down into the pit.

Don’t hide your face from me. If you are in love with the LORD God, you do not want to lose his intimate closeness.

 

VERSE 8. Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

your loving kindness in the morning. Many people spend the first part of the day in the Bible and in prayer. It is a powerful way to start the day with God’s loving kindness.

I trust in you. David restates his trust in the LORD.

We disciples are to trust the LORD God with all our heart. He offers us the path of true wisdom. Will you trust in him and act upon his leading? Read more »

I lift up my soul to you. David gives himself to the LORD. Lovers give themselves to each other.

 

VERSE 9. Deliver me, LORD, from my enemies. I flee to you to hide me.

Deliver me. David needs to be rescued.

I flee to you to hide me. David hid himself in God. How can you hide yourself in God?

 

VERSE 10. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

 

VERSE 11. Revive me, LORD, for your name’s sake. In your righteousness, bring my soul out of trouble.

for your name’s sake. David wants the LORD to be glorified.

 

VERSE 12. In your loving kindness, cut off my enemies, and destroy all those who afflict my soul, For I am your servant.
