Psalm 85

Asking God to restore his favor.

 


 

ASKING GOD TO RESTORE HIS FAVOR

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by the sons of Korah.

 

VERSE 1. LORD, you have been favorable to your land. You have restored the fortunes of Jacob.

you have been favorable. Has the LORD been favorable to you?

 

VERSE 2. You have forgiven the iniquity of your people. You have covered all their sin. Selah.

forgiven the iniquity of your people. Has the LORD forgiven your sins?

 

VERSE 3. You have taken away all your wrath. You have turned from the fierceness of your anger.

 

VERSE 4. Turn us, God of our salvation, and cause your indignation toward us to cease.

your indignation toward us. In those days, people thought that if they had a bad experience, such as illness or a defeat in battle, that it was because God was angry with them.

 

VERSE 5. Will you be angry with us forever? Will you draw out your anger to all generations?

 

VERSE 6. Won’t you revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?

 

VERSE 7. Show us your loving kindness, LORD. Grant us your salvation.

 

VERSE 8. I will hear what God, the LORD, will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, his holy ones; but let them not turn again to folly.

I will hear. Do you listen to the LORD God?

How do you go about listen to the LORD God? What specifically do you do?

  • Be still in contemplative silence?
  • Read the Bible and see what stands out to you?
  • Receive input from holy people?
  • Something else?

he will speak peace to his people. Are you at peace with God?

 

VERSE 9. Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.

his salvation is near. The kingdom of God is at hand!

Mark 1:15. The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.

 

VERSE 10. Mercy and truth meet together. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

 

VERSE 11. Truth springs out of the earth. Righteousness has looked down from heaven.

 

VERSE 12. Yes, the LORD will give that which is good. Our land will yield its increase.

NAB translation. The LORD will surely grant abundance; our land will yield its increase.

ICEL translation. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit.

The LORD will surely grant abundance. Do you believe the LORD will grant abundance to YOU?

 

VERSE 13. Righteousness goes before him, And prepares the way for his steps.

NAB translation: “Prosperity will match before the Lord, and good fortune will follow behind.”
