David asks the LORD to not send him down to Sheol. In fact, the LORD is David’s strength and shield.
VERSE 1. To you, LORD, I call. My rock, don’t be deaf to me; lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit.
go down into the pit. This is a synonym for the grave.
lift up my hands. Do you lift up your hands high when you pray? Most Pentecostals and Charismatics do. But strangely, few other Christians do, even though the Bible speaks of it as the normal way to pray:
Psalm 28:2. Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.
Psalm 63:4. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
Psalm 134:2. Lift up your hands [in] the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.
Psalm 141:2. Let my prayer be set before you like incense; the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice.
1 Timothy 2:8. I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.
VERSE 3. Don’t draw me away with the wicked, with the workers of iniquity who speak peace with their neighbors, but mischief is in their hearts.
VERSE 4. Give them according to their work, and according to the wickedness of their doings. Give them according to the operation of their hands. Bring back on them what they deserve.
VERSE 5. Because they don’t respect the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.
VERSE 6. Blessed be the LORD, because he has heard the voice of my petitions.
VERSE 7. The LORD is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank him.
my heart … rejoices. Offering God the activity of your heart is a great way to pray. Here, David offers God rejoicing.
VERSE 8. The LORD is their strength. He is a stronghold of salvation to his anointed.
NAB translation: The Lord is my strength and my shield, in whom my heart trusted and found help.
VERSE 9. Save your people, and bless your inheritance. Be their shepherd also, and bear them up forever.
