SUMMARY

Title

The English title “Psalms” (or “Psalter”) is derived from the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

In the Codex Vaticanus (fourth century AD) the title Psalmoi and the subtitle Biblos psalmōn (“Book of Psalms”) are used.

In the Codex Alexandrinus (fifth century) the name Psalterion appears.

The Greek word psalmos, which translates the Hebrew mizmor, signifies music accompanied by stringed instruments.

In the Hebrew Bible the title of the book is seifer t’hilleem, “Book of Praises,” referring to their content rather than form.

Author

Ninety individual Psalms have a preposition which attributes the author:

  • Moses: Psalm 90
  • David: 73 individual psalms
  • Asaph: Psalms 50 and 73-83
  • Heman the Ezrahite: Psalm 88
  • Psalm 89: Ethan the Ezrahite
  • Solomon: Psalms 72 and 127

Date

The Psalms were written over a span of time that went from from Moses through the return from the Captivity.

The timeframe of Moses was roughly the 15th century BC. And the return from the Captivity spanned 538 BC to 444 BC.

So the authoring of the Psalms spanned a millennium.

Purpose

The Psalms record a vast range of religious ideas and impressions. Nearly all the theological ideas of the Old Testament worldview surface here.

For that reason it is difficult to discover a specific purpose for the overall collection.
