I LOVE THE LORD

 

VERSE 1. I love the LORD, because he listens to my voice, and my cries for mercy.

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the Psalms and from the entire Bible.

I love the LORD. We presume that people in the Bible loved the LORD God. However, the Bible does not often record them saying it.

This verse does. This is a very unique phrase in the Bible.

 

VERSE 2. Because he has turned his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the Psalms and from the entire Bible.

he has turned his ear to me. Our own personal experience of the mercy of God inspires us to be faithful to him, close to him all our days.

as long as I live. The author is making a lifelong commitment of fidelity to the LORD God.

 

VERSE 3. The cords of death surrounded me, the pains of Sheol got a hold of me. I found trouble and sorrow.

death surrounded me. The author begins sharing his personal experience of being delivered by the LORD God.

 

VERSE 4. Then I called on the LORD’s name: “LORD, I beg you, deliver my soul.”

deliver my soul. The author cries out to the LORD God.

 

VERSE 5. The LORD is Gracious and righteous. Yes, our God is merciful.

The LORD is Gracious. The LORD God rescued the author.

 

VERSE 6. The LORD preserves the simple. I was brought low, and he saved me.

 

VERSE 7. Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

Suggest you write this above your bed!

 

VERSE 8. For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

 

VERSE 9. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

I will walk. The author believed he would be delivered from immanent death.

 

VERSE 10. I believed, therefore I said, “I was greatly afflicted.”

I believed, therefore I said. If you believe in the LORD God, you tell people about him.

 

VERSE 11. I said in my haste, “All people are liars.”

Romans 3:4. May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “that you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgement.”

 

VERSE 12. What will I give to the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

What will I give to the LORD. The author felt so grateful to the LORD that he brainstormed new ways to express his thankfulness.

 

VERSE 13. I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the LORD’s name.

 

VERSE 14. I will pay my vows to the LORD, yes, in the presence of all his people.

pay my vows to the LORD. That is, sing praise.

in the presence of all his people. This is not a private transaction. Rather, singing praise to the LORD God takes place in public.

 

VERSE 15. Precious in the LORD’s sight is the death of his holy ones.

the death of his holy ones. Even when we die, the LORD God still has a purpose for us.

 

VERSE 16. LORD, truly I am your servant. I am your servant, the son of your servant girl. You have freed me from my chains.

 

VERSE 17. I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call on the LORD’s name.

 

VERSE 18. I will pay my vows to the LORD, yes, in the presence of all his people,

 

VERSE 19. in the courts of the LORD’s house, in the middle of you, Jerusalem. Praise the LORD!
